Burj Khalifa: The new tallest building in the world

THE world's tallest building explodes like a rocket - as it is lit up by fireworks at its official opening yesterday.

The skyscraper, dubbed the Dubai-vory Tower, is more than HALF A MILE high.

That's more than three times the size of Britain's tallest building, Canary Wharf Tower in London.

The 200-storey tower - its exact height revealed as 2,717ft (828m) - was opened by Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. At 828 metres (2,716.5ft), Burj Khalifa is 320 metres taller than Taipei 101, which at 508 metres (1,667 ft) had held the record for the world’s tallest building measured to the architectural top since 2004, the year the project was announced.

But many of its floors were said to be unfinished - with thousands of workers drafted in to plaster walls, cover pipes and lay carpet.

The tower's opening was overshadowed by the global financial crisis - which left Dubai with £62billion debts as property prices plummeted.

The building was named Burj Khalifa - after the United Arab Emirates president who helped Dubai with a £16billion bailout last year.

The building is so tall that it is ten degrees Celsius cooler at the top than at the base.

All design considerations took into account the 12,000 people who will live and work in the tower. The handover to residents of the various components of Burj Khalifa will begin in February.

With a total built-up area of about 6 million sq ft, Burj Khalifa features nearly 2 million sq ft of residential space and over 300,000 sq ft of prime office space, in addition to the area occupied by the keenly awaited Armani Hotel Dubai and the Armani Residences. The tower also features modern lifestyle amenities including clubs, health and fitness facilities, gourmet restaurants and the 124th floor observation deck, 'At the Top.' Burj Khalifa is the focal point of the 500-acre ‘mega-project’ by Emaar Properties, described as the new heart of Dubai.

'3 Idiots' becomes Bollywood smash

MUMBAI: Aamir Khan's latest film, "3 Idiots," has become the highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time, with strong showings at home and abroad raising hopes for further cross-over hits for Indian films. The leading actor-producer-director wrote on his blog that box office takings for the coming-of-age comedy had already surpassed those for his 2008 hit "Ghajini," which was the previous record holder."In less than 10 days 3i has overtaken the ENTIRE business of GHAJINI!!!! India, Overseas, everywhere!!! And is still going strong," Khan wrote Monday, describing himself as "fully overwhelmed and totally humbled."

India's Business Standard newspaper said Tuesday that "3 Idiots" had taken 2.4 billion rupees (51 million dollars) from the domestic and international market since opening on December 25. "Ghajini" took 2.25 billion rupees. Meanwhile www.hollywood.com and Deadline Hollywood, which both track box office takings in the United States, said "3 Idiots" has so far made 4.8 million dollars after opening in nearly 120 US theatres. No Bollywood film has crossed the four-million-dollar threshold before.

The film's success has given Bollywood a boost, after a disappointing 2009 marked by a damaging producers' boycott of multiplex cinemas in a row over box office takings, swine flu fears and a string of big budget flops.The Business Standard said "3 Idiots" has so far made more money than Bollywood's entire ticket receipts in November, which included the hit "Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani" (An Amazing Story Of Strange Love).Indian box office takings are lower than in Hollywood because of lower ticket prices.

Film critics and industry analysts attributed the success of "3 Idiots" not just to Khan's star quality, but also high production values, a sustained marketing campaign and the story's wide appeal. A public row about how much the film was based on Chetan Bhagat's best-seller "Five Point Someone," and a lack of other big-name releases, may also have helped. "It's a very well-made film with a message and with a big star. It brings back memories of people's experience of the education system in India," Taran Adarsh, from bollywoodhungama.com, said of the film's overseas success. "If you still have family here I think you identify with it all the more," he told AFP.

Mayank Shekhar, national cultural editor at The Hindustan Times newspaper, said the same expatriate Indian "IT crowd" who bought "Five Point Someone" appear to have flocked to US cinemas, boosting audiences. "What's equally important is that it's not a preachy film. It's by itself a complete comedy, which is what most mainstream audiences go for," he said. A well-constructed combination of a leading star, well-placed song-and-dance routines and a message gave it "all the elements of a Bollywood blockbuster," he added. US film studios have been eyeing India's popular Hindi-language film industry for several years, hoping to tap in to an expanding 2.3-billion-dollar market. Hopes are high that Shahrukh Khan's upcoming film "My Name Is Khan" will match or even eclipse the success of "3 Idiots."

Fox Searchlight, which promoted the Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire," and other Fox units are handling distribution. Adarsh said the overseas market is becoming increasingly important for Bollywood. "The domestic market has traditionally been measured in rupees. Today it's dollars, pounds, dirham, euros and various other currencies," he said. "It's not just the Indian diaspora. It's people in Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Middle East. The success of '3 Idiots' is just the tip of the iceberg."

RJN calls bandh against federalism

BIRGUNJ: Protesting against federalism, Rastriya Janamorcha Nepal (RJN) called a bandh in Nararayani zone on Wednesday. Normal life in the five districts of the zone has been affected due to the bandh.

The protesters have been blocking the roads in Birgunj by burning tyres on the roads and staging protest by organising a rally.

According to the Traffic Police Office, Pathalaiya few vehicles are running on Tribhuvan Highway along Pathalaiya, Birgunj.

They added that Industries, marketplaces and education institutions in the districts remained shut while vehicles stayed off the roads in Bara, Gaur, Hetauda and Chitwan.

Accoding to Acche Lal Shah, coordinator of RJN, Parsa they called the bandh to institutionalise and strengthen the republic, protect the nationality and create awareness against federalism.

Earlier, the RJN had called bandh in Gandaki, Dhaulagiri, Bheri, Karnali, Lumbini, Rapti, Seti and Mahakali zones protesting against federalism.

The RJN have been demonstrating against federalism since December 27.

Big 3 to meet again on Wednesday

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the senior leaders of the three big parties—Nepali Congress, UML and UCPN-Maoist—held at the Hotel Annapurna on Tuesday decided to hold the next meeting on Wednesday along with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and NC president Girija Prasad Koirala.

The meeting which was held for around three hours discussed the agenda finalised by a meeting among the leaders of the same parties on Friday which include clearing the environment of mistrust that has surfaced among the parties, power sharing, issue of civilian supremacy, peace process and review of past agreements, among others.

Those attending the meeting are Maoist supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Maoist leaders—Baburam Bhattarai, Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Post Bahadur Bogati and Dev Gurung, NC Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel, NC leaders--Arjun Narsingh KC, Krishna Sitaula, Ram Saran Mahat and UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, UML leaders--Bhim Rawal, Yubaraj Gyawali, Bhim Acharya and others.

मन्त्रिपरिषदद्वारा नोवेल पुरस्कारका लागि कोइरालाको नाम सिफारिस, तोरण जङ्गबहादुर सिंहलाई बलाधिकृत रथीमा बढुवा

काठमाडौं, पुस ९। मन्त्रिपरिषदको आज बसेको बैठकले काँग्रेस सभापति गिरिजाप्रसाद कोइरालालाई नोवेल शान्ति पुरस्कारको लागि सिफारिस गर्ने निर्णय गरेको छ। सिंहदरवारमा बिहीबार विहान बसेको बैठकले शान्तिप्रक्रियामा कोईरालाले गर्नुभएको योगदानका कारण उहाँलाई नोवेल शान्ति पुरस्कारको लागि सिफारिस गरेको जनाईएको छ।

यसैगरि मानव अधिकार उल्लंघन गरी द्वन्द्वकालमा भैरवनाथ गणबाट ४९ जना बन्दी बेपत्ता पारेको आरोप लागेका नेपाली सेनाका उपरथी तोरण जङ्गबहादुर सिंहलाई बलाधिकृत रथीमा बढुवा गर्र्ने निर्णय गरेको छ। विवादित सिंहलाई वढुवा नगर्न राष्ट्रिय मानव अधिकार आयोग, मानव अधिकार उच्चायुक्तको कार्यालयलगायतका दुतावासदेखि अन्तराष्ट्रिय संघ संस्थाको विरोधको वावजुत पनि सरकारले बढुवा गरेको छ। बलाधिकृत रथीका रुपमा बढुवा भएपछि उनी नेपाली सेनामा प्रधानसेनापति छत्रमानसिंह गुरुङपछि दोस्रो वरियतामा रहने छन्। रुक्माङगद कटवाल प्रधानसेनापति हुँदा दोस्रो वरियतामा रहेका कुलबहादुर खड्काको अवकाशपछि यो पद खाली रहेको थियो। यद्यपि, प्रधानसेनापति अमेरिका र भारतको भ्रमणमा जाँदा कार्यवाहक प्रधानसेनापतिको जिम्मेवारी सरकारले सिंहलाई नै सुम्पेको थियो।

यसैगरी बैठकले अनमीनको म्याद ६ महिना थप्ने निर्णय गर्नुका साथै अछाममा आफ्नै सहकर्मीद्वारा बलात्कृत सुन्तली थामीको घटना छानवीन गर्न छानवीन समितिको गठन गर्ने निर्णय गरेको छ। मन्त्रिपरिषदको बैठकले रुकुमकी पत्रकार टीका विष्टलाई उपचारस्वरुप तीन लाख रुपैंया सहयोग गर्ने निर्णय गरेको छ।बढुवा भएका रथी सिंहमाथिको भैरवनाथ गण सम्बन्धी विवादबारे प्रधानमन्त्री तथा मन्त्रिपरिषद् कार्यालयका सचिव रामचन्द्रमान सिंहको संयोजकत्वमा गठित तीन सदस्यीय छानविन समितिले छानविन गरी सफाई दिएकाले उहाँको बढुवा भएको बताइएको छ। यसैगरी प्रधानमन्त्रीको यही पुस ११ गतेदेखिको चीन भमणका लागि २५ जनालाई सरकारी खर्चको व्यवस्था गर्ने र आफ्नै खर्चमा जाने गरी जम्मा ३६ जनालाई भ्रमण टोलीमा समावेश गरिने निर्णय भएको छ।

यसरी हप्काइए प्रचण्ड

जातीय गणराज्यहरू एकतर्फी रूपमा घोषणा गर्नेक्रममा पुस १ मा वसन्तपुरबाट नेवाः गणराज्य घोषणा गरेपछि दङ्ग परेका माओवादी अध्यक्ष प्रचण्डको खुसी दुई दिन पनि टिक्न सकेन। गणराज्य घोषणा गरेर विजयोत्सव मनाएका प्रचण्डलाई पुस २ गते जब कसैको फोन आयो, उनी नराम्रोसाग भस्किए र कालोनिलो भए। पार्टी काममा व्यस्त रहेका बेला सााझ अध्यक्ष प्रचण्डलाई एक्कासि फोन आयो। उताबाट के भनियो बुझ्न सकिएन तर प्रचण्डले झस्किएर जवाफ फर्काउनुभयो, वहतो कमिक था। ऐसा बात नहीं है।' माओवादी अध्यक्ष प्रचण्डले जवाफ फर्काएको सुनेर उहााको वरिपरि रहेकाहरूका कान ठाडा भए। किनकि प्रचण्डको हाउभाउ हम्मेसी झस्केको भावमा देखिादैनथ्यो सबैका सामुन्नेमा। त्यसलगत्तै बाहिरसमेत सुनिनेगरी उताको आवाज आयो, 'अगर कमिक है तो जहाा भारत लिखा था वहाा चाइना लिखकर एकबार देखाओ।' जवाफमा प्रचण्ड बोल्न सक्नुभएन। उहाा अकमकिनुभयो। उताबाट आवाज आयो, 'हमरा राष्ट्रिय झण्डाका इस तरह अपमान गर्नेका अधिकार आपको किसने दिया? राष्ट्रिय झण्डाको अपमानका मतलब क्या हो सकता है, आप समझ ते हो?' प्रचण्डलाई एक्कासि हप्काउने को होलान्? प्रचण्ड निकटस्थ स्रोतका अनुसार उहाालाई हप्काउने अरू कोही नभएर भारतीय गुप्तचर संस्था 'रअ' का केसी बर्मा भएको बुझिएको छ। बुझिएअनुसार वसन्तपुरमा आयोजित गणराज्य घोषणा कार्यक्रममा माओवादी कार्यकर्ताले भारतीय अपमानपूर्वक फालेको दृश्यबाट आक्रोशित भएका बर्माले प्रचण्डसाग टेलिफोनमा आक्रोश पोखेका थिए। तर, केही बोल्न खोज्नुभएका प्रचण्डले राम्रोसाग जवाफ फर्काउन पाउनुभएन। उतैबाट टेलिफोन राखियो। वसन्तुपरमा माओवादीले देखाएको नेपाली नक्सामा अमेरिकाप्रति लक्षित गरी चिलले तानिरहेको र भारततिर लक्षित गरी बुट बजारेको दृश्य थियो। गीतकै क्रममा माओवादीका कार्यकर्ता कलाकारले भारतीय हस्तक्षेपको प्रतीकात्मक विरोध गर्दै झण्डा फालेका थिए। र, यो दृश्य हेरेर प्रचण्ड मुस्कुराइरहेका थिए। त्यही दृश्यको भिडियो रअको हेडक्वार्टरमा पुगेपछि भारतीय अधिकारीहरू आक्रोशित भएको र आक्रोशको केन्द्र माओवादी अध्यक्ष प्रचण्ड बन्नुभएको थियो।

कोइरालाको नाम नोबल शान्ति पुरस्कारका लागि सिफारिश

मन्त्रिपरिषद्को बैठकले पूर्वप्रधानमन्त्री तथा नेपाली कांग्रेसका सभापति गिरिजाप्रसाद कोइरालाको नाम सिफारिश गर्ने निर्णय गरेको छ। त्यसैगरी मानवअधिकार उल्लंघनको आरोपमा बढुवा नगर्न दबाब परिरहेका नेपाली सेनाका उपरथी तोरण जंगबहादुर सिंहलाई पनि बढुवा गर्ने निर्णय सरकारले गरेको छ।

घाइते डीएसपीलाई दाहालपत्‍नी र हिसिलाले भेटे

पुस ९- आमहड्तालको सुरक्षामा खटिएका प्रहरी नायव निरीक्षक दिलीप चौधरीमाथि नियोजित आक्रमण गरेको आरोप लागेको एकीकृत माओवादीका दुई नेतृ बुधबार जुस र फलफूल बोकेर उनको स्वास्थ्यलाभको कामना गर्न अस्पताल पुगे। न्युरो अस्पताल बाँसबारीमा उपचार गराइरहेका चौधरीसँग भलाकुसारी नभए पनि उनीहरूले पत्नीलाई भेटे र पार्टीको पार्टीको सन्देश सुनाए।हातमा फलफूल र जुस बोक्दै आक्रमणमा पार्टी संलग्न नभएको सन्देश बोकेर माओवादी अध्यक्ष पुष्पकमल दाहाल पत्नी सीता र माओवादी उपाध्यक्ष डा. बाबुराम भट्टराईकी पत्नी तथा माओवादी नेतृ हिसिला यमी बुधबार छुट्टाछुट्टै अस्पताल पुगेका थिए। अस्पताल स्रोतका अनुसार यमी बिहानै पाँच सयको दुई बट्टा जुस किनेर अस्पताल पुगेकी थिइन् भने सीता मध्याह्न ११ बजे फलफूल बोकेर।

माओवादी आमहड्तालको पहिलो दिन नयाँ बानेश्वर क्षेत्रको कमान्ड सम्हालिरहेका चौधरी अल्झेर लडेपछि प्रदर्शनकारीले इँट्टा र रडले हानेर मरणासन्न पारेपछि प्रहरीका उच्च अधिकारीले आक्रमण नियोजित भएको बताएका थिए। चौधरी भेट्न पुगेका नेतृले भने आक्रमणमा पार्टी संलग्न नभएको परिवारलाई बताए। यमी पुग्दा चौधरी निदाएकाले कुराकानी भएन। स्वास्थ्यमा सुधार आएपछि आइसियुबाट क्याबिनमा सारिएका उनलाई टाढैवाट हेरेर यमीले पत्नीसँग उनको स्वास्थ्य अवस्थाबारे जिज्ञासा राखेकी थिइन्। जुस चौधरी पत्नीलाई दिँदै उनले भनिन्, 'अहिले कस्तो छ?' प्रतिउत्तरमा पत्नीले पहिलाभन्दा सञ्चो भएको बताइन्।

अस्पताल स्रोतका अनुसार यमीले चौधरीमाथि भएको आक्रमणप्रति दुःखमनाउ गरेकी थिइन्। उनले भनिन्, 'माओवादीले नियोजित रूपमा आक्रमण गरेको भन्दै प्रचार भएको छ, तर उहाँमाथि हाम्रो पार्टीले आक्रमण गरेको हैन, त्यो दुर्घटना मात्र हो।' उनले घटना अत्यन्त दुखपूर्ण रहेको बताउँदै चाँडै सञ्चो हुन शुभकामना दिइन्। माओवादी अध्यक्ष दाहाल आफैं चौधरीको स्वास्थ्य अवस्थाबारे बुझ्न जाने चर्चा भए पनि करिब ११ बजे दाहालपत्नी सीता अध्यक्षको सन्देशबाहक बनेर अस्पताल पुगिन्। चिकित्सकहरूले घाइते चौधरीलाई कुरा नगर्न सचेत गराएकाले सीताले चौधरीपत्नीसँगै भलाकुसारी गर्दै अध्यक्ष दाहालको सन्देश सुनाएकी थिइन्। अस्पताल स्रोतका अनुसार सीताले घटनाप्रति दुखमनाउ गर्दै 'अध्यक्ष दाहालले शिघ्र स्वास्थ्यलाभको कामना गर्नुभएको छ' भनेर सन्देश सुनाइन्। प्रहरीले बानेश्वर घटनाको अनुसन्धानका लागि मंगलबार कार्य विभागका प्रमुख प्रहरी अतिरिक्त महानिरीक्षक किरणकुमार गौतमको अध्यक्षतामा छानबिन समिति गठन गरेको थियो।

दुई दिन आइसियुमा राखेर हालै क्याबिनमा सारिएका चौधरीको स्वास्थ्यमा सुधार आइरहेको छ। धारिलो हतियार प्रहारबाट टाउकोमा छवटा गम्भीर चोट लागेका चौधरीको शल्यक्रिया गरी ४५ वटा टाँका लगाइएकाले उनी बोल्न सक्ने अवस्थामा छैनन्। आफन्तका अनुसार टाउकोभरि पट्टी बेरिएका उनी बोल्दा दुख्ने भएकाले घाउ निको नभएसम्म नबोल्न चिकित्सकहरूले सुझाव दिएका छन्। चौधरीले परिवारका सदस्यसँग सामान्य कुराकानी गर्ने गरेका छन्। परिवारका अनुसार बुधबारदेखि चौधरीले खाना खान सुरु गरेका छन्।
